The primary ticket market is dysfunctional and it’s the secondary market, which is actually correcting these defects. This is one of the key findings of a report on the secondary market that was released this week by the Institute of Economic Affairs, based in London.
Outdated 20th Century Anti-Scalping Laws
It is clear to anyone who buys, sells or resells sports or live entertainment tickets that the Internet has completely revolutionized the world of ticket reselling. Today, online marketplaces like StubHub provide a safe and transparent place for fans to buy and sell tickets.
Although most states, provinces, and localities that once prohibited pre-Internet ticket “scalping” have modernized their laws to reflect consumer and market behaviors, there are still six states and two provinces that maintain major restrictions on the resale of tickets: Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Rhode Island, Manitoba and Quebec.
StubHub believes an open and competitive ticket market benefits fans and supports the modernization of antiquated ticket laws.
